Yami Gautam speaks out against the accusation that Article 370 is “propaganda, jingoist”: “There isn’t any…”

Yami Gautam claims that there is no need in defending the purpose of her movie Article 370 to those who already believe it to be propaganda. The next political drama, starring Gautam, is her husband Aditya Dhar’s first production under B62 Studios. The 2019 motion picture Uri: The Surgical Strike is directed by Dhar.

The publication of Article 370 coincides with the Lok Sabha elections of 2024. The film, which is helmed by Aditya Suhas Jambhale, will be released on February 23.

“If someone is referring to it as “chest-thumping,” “jingoism,” or “propaganda,” then…You won’t be able to connect with or appreciate the movie if a segment of the audience enters theaters with the idea or expectation that this is what it’s about. Justifying the movie to them is pointless. The audience doesn’t, in my opinion, consider these points. In an interview with PTI, Gautam said, “This film is for the majority of the audience, and we make films for the audience.”

Jio Studios is also supporting the creators of Article 370, who said that it offers a “potent narrative inspired by true events that shaped the fate of Kashmir.” On August 5, 2019, the Central government divided the former state of Jammu and Kashmir into the union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, rescinding Article 370, which had granted the former state unique status.

In the movie, Gautam portrays NIA agent Zooni Haksar. She called Article 370 one of the most interesting things she’s ever read. “And I thought it needed to be brought to life in a movie. I tend to follow my gut a lot of the time. I don’t attempt to talk myself into doing anything if I don’t have a connection to the narrative or the screenplay. I don’t believe my audience has ever let me down when I’ve felt good immediately after reading a screenplay,” she said.

The 35-year-old actor described it as a “honor” to portray a role that was inspired by a real-life intelligence operative. “As I read the screenplay, ideas for her character development, attitude, level of intensity, and action sequences were coming to me, but the most important thing is to compile and record them. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance, therefore I made an effort to give this role properly,” she said.

There are several firsts for Gautam in relation to Article 370. She is expecting her first child with Dhar in addition to the fact that the movie is her first home production. The performer said that by the time she learned she was pregnant, the crew had finished filming the demanding action and training scenes.

“By then, all that was left of us were the talking parts and the walking, outside parts. I was thus lucky. For me, being able to strike a balance was preferable. Pregnancy is a very private matter. Aditya and I have a pretty intimate relationship nonetheless. I didn’t want to be mindful, but we had to be. I will do everything it takes to take care of the life that is developing inside of me because I am responsible for it. However, I had to uphold a professional promise I made,” the woman said.

Gautam’s next film appearance is in B62 Studios’ caper comedy Dhoom Dhaam, which also stars Pratik Gandhi.
